What are your convictions? What firm beliefs or ideals do you stand by? If your convictions were confronted with opposition, are you confident enough in your understanding to defend them?
I stand firm in my conviction to live according the the Word. Underlying that, however, the lines become blurred. In my own experience, I have found a great deal of divisiveness within the Christian church, so much so that at times it makes me question my own beliefs. Some churches preach the gospel of love. The pastor loves on his/her congregation and as a result the members of the church feel a responsibility to minister in the same way. Other churches may place more value on obedience. They may expect their body to adhere to certain rules and guidelines to enforce obedience to the Lord. When the two meet, questions may arise as to who may be more "Christ-like". We may size each other up, wondering why he/she doesn't act or minister in the same way you do. Some of us who are new believers might not yet have strong roots in their convictions. As a result, he/she may begin to question their own foundation of faith.
Let's take the way we envision God for example. I was raised in a loving environment, where the image of God was painted in hues of love, forgiveness, and mercy. As a result, I try to walk accordingly and fellowship with believers who share the same perspectives. I have come across fellow believers who illustrate God as One that should be feared, a jealous God, or a Redeemer. This is also true as spoken about in the Bible. My walk may be different than theirs. My talk may be different than theirs. But neither is more "Christ-like". I find that I have to check myself every now and then when sentiments of inferiority in my convictions kick in. Just because this Christian wears a skirt down to her ankles, doesn't mean that you are in sin if yours comes to your knees. Are you comfortable in your own skin as a Christian or do you feel as though your convictions vacillate with the wind?
This leads me to another stumbling block. Who should be questioning your convictions? People of the world, fellow believers, or God? You can sit down and have a conversation with non-believers and realize that there are so many different perspectives when there is only one God. You can converse with fellow believers and realize that the same holds true. Why is this? My only speculation is that we all come from different backgrounds, whether it be ethnicity, culture, or up-bringing. Our history can paint or taint an ideal based on what we've heard, seen, or felt about it at a given time.
My resolution is this: Get in where you fit in. Not every church is for you. You may not care to fellowship with every Christian. That is okay. Spend time alone with God and ask Him to reveal Himself to you. In that time you will gain a deeper understanding of Him, which in turn stimulates growth in faith and in our convictions. Don't let fellow man decide for you. Stand firm for in you He has planted a seed of righteousness, justice, and, truth!
Be bold, Be Strong, and Trust that you are who God made you to be!
Until next time...
Stay Encouraged!!!
